Education
of life is a way to prevent from AIDS. It based on Youth
education through a set of human and spiritual values.
Is also consists of dealing with current sexual problems, met by
youth.
4 main lines:
- Psychological
- Anthropological
- Sociological
- Cultural
- Psychological
Based on
Dr G. Egan's work whose main subject is addictive behaviours (drugs,
alcohol and abusive sex).
The
program consists of behaviour change. The young person will become
someone new, without any addiction.
Youth
Alive Club is a friendly place for young person decided not to have
sex before wedding and to be faithful to his/her partner.
This program
was created in Sub-Saharan. It has been fit to African culture.
• Historical
Three main
facts:
1. 1988
Kalungu, Masaka (Uganda). Some students called ou to Dr Kay Lawlor:
"If behaviour change is the safest way not to get AIDS, show
us how to change !". This made Kay think about applying Egan's
work to his students, without denying their culture and values.
2. December 1991, Dakar (Senegal): During the PanAfrican conference
about AIDS, a group made a "Conviction Declaration":
"We believe in individuals and communities abilities to change
their behaviour... This is our duty to recognize it, to look for
it and to support it". In consequence, a program of Education
for life, based on Kay Lawlor's work, was created.
3. 1993 Mengo-Kamwokya (Kampala). Some young people needed belong
to a club: Creation of Youth Alive Club
• Description
The main
tool to communicate Behaviour Change principles is the "Counselling
Camp". It lasts 6 days and consists of 3 stages: open young
people eyes on life; realize that a behaviour change is possible;
finally do it. These 6 days are full of conferences (nurses, doctors,
counsellors...), role plays, songs, and discussions. At this stage,
no agreement is made. Every teenager goes back to his/her family.
There, he or she can evaluate his/her abilities to change his/her
behaviour. However, he or she can go to meetings during week-ends,
and then decide to join the Club.
• Efficiency : AIDS
prevention in Uganda.
In Uganda,
Education for life spread efficiently thanks to the actions of local
communities, youth groups for all religions, and also government
and schools.
Soon, behavior indicators made UNAIDS realize that
a behaviour change was going on. "The average age for young
gril having sex for the fist time has gone from 15.9 years old in
1989 to 16.5 in 1995.[...] The use of condoms has become more and
more common." Nevertheless, "the most important factor
has been behaviour change for all these years: an older ago to have
sex for the first time." (Dr Asimwe-Okiror). In a matter of
fact, the seropositive curve has significantly decreased: from 15%
in 1990 to 5% in late 2001. (UNAIDS supported by the ministry of
health & epidemiological Institute in human reproduction, Geneva)
Above all, the efforts from everyone (government, school, religious
communities) to fight against AIDS have been crucial.
Other African countries (Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia) have also
met success in prevention. Note that wherever AIDS decreased, government
has showed a strong will to fight the problems.
